Analysts polled by The Wall Street Journal said that iPhone 4 buyers were keeping new phones without returning them at the same rates they normally do. Multiple analysts told the WSJ they did not expect Apple to make a recall of the device despite the wide reporting of the problem.

The research asked 2,000 users about their favourite devices, with the iPhone coming out as the most popular device, with a 13 per cent share of the votes. The Nokia 3210 came second (on 8.5 per cent) and the Nokia 6310 third (on 8.4 per cent).

Nokia devices actually made a strong showing in the top ten, with a total of five devices compared to three from Motorola.

Recent releases such as the Palm Pre, Samsung Omnia and HTC Touch have tried to follow the success of the Apple device. It remains to be seen if the forthcoming iPad device will have the same impact on the burgeoning tablet market.

The corporation was planning to release free news and sports apps for the iPhone next month, but have put the idea on hold after concerns about unfair market advantage.

The BBC Trust heard concerns from newspapers that the app would unfairly influence the market for news apps. Newspapers are seeking to capitalise on the iPhone in order to make up for falling sales with U.S. papers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times having announced agreements with Apple for special subscription packages.

The Trust will now review its plans and decide whether the apps would violate the BBC’s public service agreement.

Minor updates on the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone3GS are free of cost but a new major version can now add a price to their release. This limitation was previously used by the developers to give their upgraded version a new name. The users would have to pay the full price to upgrade because the changes made for the upgrade justify to its cost. One may encounter some dialog boxes while upgrade any application and that might just be an indication that Apple is working on something big here. Since the app store has been launched, both the user and the developer have asked for such a thing. The news is not yet confirmed but it looks like Apple is going to do something big like this in the near future.

One of these questions surrounds Apple’s iPad and Tethering

Apple’s iPad will be sold in two editions: a Wi-Fi-only edition, set to become available on April 3, and a 3G-enabled edition, set to go on sale later in the month complete with data plans from network providers. What is unknown was whether the Wi-Fi-based iPad would have the capability to tether to an iPhone, thereby letting you harness the data connection from your mobile plan to surf the Web.

The answer appears to be no.

According to Apple blog AppleInsider, a Swedish user named Jezper Söderlund says he sent an e-mail directly to Steve Jobs asking about the availability of tethering between the iPad and the iPhone and, the user reports, Jobs wrote back.

Here’s what Söderlund’s e-mail reportedly said:

“I’ll keep it short. I’m Jezper from Sweden, a long time Apple fan, currently about to replace the very last computer at home with a brand spanking new iMac i7. I’m also awaiting the release of the iPad. However, I have one question:

Will the Wi-Fi-only version somehow support tethering thru my iPhone?

Two devices, based on the same OS, with already built-in technology to share one data plan suggests a secondary contract could possibly be redundant.

From the look of your keynote, where the iPad sits well between my MacBook Pro and my iPhone, I was hoping the three of them could interact as seamless as possible.

Apple and Tethering

Apple Tethering has long been an area of contention among even the most ardent Apple fanboys. After axing a third-party tethering app from the App Store in 2008, Apple and AT&T have remained decidedly vague about when the functionality could return to the much-adored phone.

If true, then, the lack of tethering support on the iPad shouldn’t come as a surprise. While Jobs didn’t go into great detail about the iPad’s other potential tethering possibilities, whether the 3G iPad would be able to tether its data connection to a laptop or desktop, for example — most of those scenarios seem like long shots coming from the dynamic duo of Apple and AT&T.

The minor upgrade includes an improvement to the iPhone 3GS’s accuracy of the battery level indicator and fixes issues with certain third-party applications refusing to launch. The new firmware also includes five security updates.

Firmware 3.1.3 is 228MB and is distributed to your iPhone, iPhone 3G or iPhone3GS via the regular iTunes update process.

Apple is expected to deliver a more significant update to the iPhone firmware to coincide with the launch of the iPad prior to the end of March.

The iPhone 3.2 software is likely include support for apps which are designed to dynamically adjust the screen size depending on whether the iPhone or iPad are being used.

The announcement ends a long wait in South Korea for Apple’s iPhone with the South Korean market dominated by domestic manufacturers Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. Speculation has focused on how South Korean consumers, known for favoring the local makers, will react to the iPhone’s introduction.

Steve Park, Apple’s spokesman in Seoul, confirmed KT’s announcement, but declined further comment and would offer no sales projections.

The iPhone made its formal debut in China late last month via local partner China Unicom Ltd. It went on sale in Japan last year and is also available in India and Australia, as well as other countries in the region.

Worldwide the iPhone is available in 86 countries and territories and will be soon in four more, according to Apple’s Web site. Despite KT’s announcement, the site still did not mention South Korea.

“We are thrilled to bring iPhone to South Korea,” Kim Woo-sik, CEO of KT’s personal customer group, said in a press release. “Our customers will enjoy the power and benefits of using the revolutionary iPhone on KT’s 3G network.”

The iPhone’s introduction was delayed by regulatory hurdles, the last of which was overcome on Wednesday when the Korea Communications Commission approved the granting of a business license to Apple to offer location based services including functions such as maps and direction finders that are included on the iPhone3GS. South Korean law requires companies that provide such applications to obtain government permission.

Rogue Amoeba’s Paul Kafasis has citing his frustration with the App Store approval process as to why he has quit development of iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone3GS apps. According to his company blog he is throwing in the towel on iPhone app development after experiencing a three-and-a-half month app approval period.

His growing irritation with the App Store centres on an update he wanted to release for his Airfoil Speakers Touch iPhone app. The app allows users to receive audio from any Mac or Windows-based PC and the update fixed some issues with audio sync.

Despite this Apple rejected the update because it used images of Apple products in the app. The way Airfoil Speakers Touch works is that it shows you graphically what machine and application your audio is coming from on the host computer. If you are connected to an iMac running Safari, that’s what will show up in the iPhone app.

This isn’t something that Kafasis hacked together–this functionality is freely available as part of Mac OS X for developers to use. In fact, Airfoil Speakers Touch 1.0 was still in the App Store, approved by Apple, with these images.

“The only thing Apple’s process was doing was preventing a needed bug-fix from reaching the hands of our mutual customers,” said Kafasis.

In order to get the fixes to customers, Kafasis took out all of the offending images and replaced them with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) logo. If you tap on the logo, you will be taken to a page explaining why the images have been removed.

Kafasis is asking users to consider donating to the EFF. While the organization isn’t involved with his decision to place its logo in his app, “if Apple is to change, it may take such an organization to make it happen,” he said.

As a developer, Kafasis also wants users to know the frustrations they have to go through to put out software. “We wanted to ship a simple bug fix, and it took almost four months of slow replies, delays and dithering by Apple,” said Kafasis. “All the while, our buggy, and supposedly infringing version, was still available. There’s no other word for that but ‘broken.’”

This isn’t the end of the road for Kafasis. A Mac developer for 11 years, he will re-focus his efforts back to his popular Mac-based applications.
